Home Sports Bulldogs Roll Past Red Raiders

by Chris Johnstone

No. 7-ranked Concordia women’s basketball team continued their winning streak on the night of Saturday, Dec. 10 as they defeated the Northwestern Red Raiders inside Walz Arena, 91-44.

Freshman forward Philomena Lammers led the Bulldogs with 18 points. Junior guard Mary Janovich came close to a double-double with seven points and 11 assists, with six of the assists coming in the first quarter. Sophomore forward Quinn Wragge added 12 points.

The Bulldogs have won their last 12 games with their only loss coming to the No.1 ranked team Marian University in their season opener in Denver. The Red Raiders came into the game with a 9-5 overall record and a 3-5 record in GPAC play.

“The team came out today focused because we know how tough of a team Northwestern is,” Janovich said, “We played hard and played together and just made good things happen.”

Red Raiders guard Darbi Gustafson paced Northwestern with 14 points and eight rebounds but it was not enough to overcome Concordia’s stifling defense. Janovich’s 11 assists orchestrated the offense and led to easy baskets throughout the game.

“I was just hitting the open man, and they finished very well,” Janovich said.

The Bulldogs have almost a week off during finals before they take on Dordt College on Friday, Dec. 16 on the Defenders’ home floor. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
