Home Sports Concordia Softball Divides Doubleheader with Midland

by Garrett Suchanek

The Concordia softball team took the field for a matchup with Midland University on Monday, April 25 after being rained out twice and almost took a clean sweep of the Warriors, but Midland edged out the Bulldogs in game two to split the doubleheader. The Bulldogs are now 28-15 on the year and 9-9 in GPAC.

In the first game, the Bulldogs started hot and scratched three runs across in the first inning. Sophomore Autumn Owens and freshman Leah Kalkwarf drove in the three runs. After giving up one run in the top of the second inning, the Bulldogs responded with three more runs in the third inning to push their lead to 6-1. Concordia added an insurance run in the fifth inning and ended up winning 7-3.

Sophomore Michaela Woodward pitched a complete game and picked up her 10th win of the year. Woodward gave up three earned runs on four hits but struck out seven Warriors.

In the second game, both teams scored a run in the first inning and went into the fourth inning tied at 1 apiece. The fourth inning was an offensive explosion for both teams. Midland started the fourth inning with two quick outs but responded with three straight hits, one being a home run. The Bulldogs answered Midland’s three runs with two runs of their own.

Heading into the sixth inning, the game was tied at 4-4. The Warriors mustered two runs on two hits and one error to take a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the sixth. The Bulldogs cut the Warrior lead to one after senior Nicole Dobernecker sent a home run over the left field wall, but that was all for Concordia. Midland held on for the 6-5 win.

Concordia will close out its regular season road trips with a doubleheader in Omaha against the College of Saint Mary Flames on Wednesday, April 27. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
